Catherine "Katie" Shoun and Rufus Moore

Catherin "Katie" Shoun (6 November 1804- ?) married Rufus Moore in the early 1820's. We can find no record of this marriage date of place. Rufus descends from John Moore, Risdon Moore and Shildes Moore. He was a brother of Greene Moore who maried Katie's sister, Sarah Shoun.

Katie and Rufus lived in Mountain City, Tennessee, and they had three children, which are listed below, along with their year of birth and death, the name of their spouse, and year of marriage:

(1) James L. Moore(c. 1822- ?)
(2) Elizabeth Moore(c. 1824- ?)Taply Widby (1840)
(3) Sarah Edna Moore(1829-1858)William B. Stout (1845)(3 ch)

      (1) We have no information on the whereabouts or family of James L. Moore. There is a belief that he died young, and that he may have used Shoun as his last name. One of our "cousins," Darlene Shawn, who is a registered genealogist, does not believe that James or Elizabeth are the children of Rufus Moore.

In Leonard Shoun's will, dated 6 December 1841, he states that Rufus Moore is obligated to care for James and Elizabeth. This is the basis of Darlene's conclusion that they were the children of Catherine, but not Rufus.

      (2) Elizabeth Moore (c. 1824- ?) married Taply Widby (c. 1808- ?) on 21 February 1840, in Johnson County, Tennessee. We believe that Taply was married twice, first to Nancy Morefield on 22 December 1837 in Johnson County. We are unaware of the outcome of this marriage. Neither Elizabeth or Taply can be located in a subsequent Johnson County census.

      (3) Sarah Edna Moore (11 January 1829-1 April 1858) married William B. Stout (18 April 1821-7 July 1871) on 19 January 1845 in Johnson County, Tennessee. To this union were born three children. Sarah divorced William B. Stout, sometime between the birth of their last child in 1850 and his second marriage to Nancy S. Shoun on 3 June 1855. Nancy and Sarah were cousins. There were seven children born to his second marriage.

The children of Sarah Edna and William are listed below, with the year of birth/death, name of spouse(s), year of marriage, and the number and names of children, if known:
