William Shoun and Jane Brown

William Shoun (1801-1876) was the seventh-born child of Leonard Shoun and Barbara Virginia Slemp. He was married twice, first to Jane "Jennie" Brown (1809-1855) on 1 September 1825, in Johnson County, Tennessee. Upon the untimely death of Jennie, William married a second time to Katy Heaton Goodwin (1817-1901), also a widow, around 1857.

William and Jennie lived on a farm, adjacent to his brothers, Frederick and Joseph, about 5 1/2 miles west of Mountain City, in Doe Valley. William was considered prosperous for his time, and an aristocrat. We believe he owned slaves at one time, and unlike many of his family, was sympathetic to the Southern cause.

Jennie's parents were George Brown and Sarah Roberts, who moved into eastern Tennessee around 1813. George was a volunteer in Captain Cole's Regiment of the 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry.

Katy Heaton Goodwin was previously married to Allen Goodwin, who had seven children, four of whom married into the Shoun family. Katy's grandfather was John Heaton, one of the early settlers in Eastern Tennessee.

William and Jennie had ten children which are lited below, along with their year of birth and death, the name of their spouse(s), and year of marriage:

(1) Solomon S. Shoun(1826-1897)Cornelia S. Kiser (1883)

(9) Eliza J. Shoun(1851-1928)James Hamilton Barry (1875)

The following covers the families of each of the above 10 children:

      (1) Solomon S. Shoun (1826-1897) and Cornelia S. Kiser (1859-1896) were married in Johnson County, Tennessee in1883. Solomon went to California in 1850, via the Cape Horn, and followed mining booms for several years in California, Nevada, Oregon and Montana. During the 1860's when the Union Pacific Rail Road was building, he and his brother, Vest P. Shoun, furnished buffalo, deer and antelope meat to the construction crews.

When gold was discovered at Deadwood, South Dakota in 1874, the two brothers made an attempt to go there, but their outfits were burned by the Federal Government, as they wanted to keep the whites out of the Black Hills, as this was sacred Indian ground. They later moved at night and through the snow to get to Deadwood, where they staked out their claims. V.P. Shoun, his brother, Solomon, helped organize the town of Deadwood, and laid it out. Both brothers sold their claims and established a freight line between Fort Pierre and Deadwood. After a few years, Solomon returned to Tennessee to marry Cornelia in 1883, and brought her back west. To this union were born three children, all born in South Dakota.

They are listed below, with their year of birth/death, name of spouse(s), and year of marriage, along with the names and year of birth/death, if known, of their children:

Alfred met with an untimely death, being crushed by a tree, as a result of a stroke of lightning, and several years later, in 1877, Elizabeth married a second time to John Shupe. Upon John's death, she married Nicholas S. Cress in 1884. Upon Nicholas' passing, Elizabeth moved west in 1900, to stay with her oldest son, my father, until her death in 1917.

He was a very large man, and as he reached his latter years, he built his own coffin, as there were no coffins that would fit his height and large frame. Vest and Nellie never had any children, but raised Colomon and Cornelia's children.

I was a very small boy when Vest would visit my parents, but he scared me to death by his size and his big old black hair and beard.
