Isaac C. Shoun and Mary "Polly" Wills

Isaac C. Shoun (1798-1845) was the fifth born child of Leonard Shoun and Barbara Virginia Slemp. He married Katherine Mary "Polly" Wills (1807-1883) on 25 January 1826 or 1827 at Doe Valley, Tennessee. Isaac and Polly lived on a farm, on Campbell Creek, near Pandora, in Johnson County. Isaac's farm was located about three or four miles west of his brothers.

Mary "Polly" Wills was the first born of Peter Wills, Sr. and Susan Weitzel. She was a double first cousin to Mary "Polly" Wills, born in 1808, who married Isaac's brother, Joseph. Isaac's Polly lost an eye boiling down maple syrup in the sugar hollow where her son, Albert, and his wife, Sarah, lived, and was called "One Eyed Polly" to differentiate between the two Marys.

Isaac was a well-educated man, and he kept a diary, which included his thoughts on many, many subjects. This diary remains in the hands of his great-grandson, Kermit T. Shoun of Mountain City, Tennessee. During Isaac's early years, he would drive a team from Mountain City to Salisbury, North Carolina, to bring goods and materials back for sale in his father's store. He became an excellent accountant, and outstanding writer.

Isaac died early in his life at the age of 47. There is some mystery to this family, as the oldest son, Adam, was reported to have been born in 1822, some five or six years before Isaac and Polly were married. Most people believe that Adam was born to Isaac and a lady, whose identity is unknown. Adam was raised by Isaac and Polly.

During the Civil War, Polly and her children and grandchildren played all kinds of tricks to protect their foodstuffs and animals. The boys would hid the horses in the forests to prevent the Rebels from stealing them, and the girls would hide their kitchen supplies in the woods to prevent them from being taken.

The ten children of Isaac and Mary "Polly" Shoun are listed below, along with their year of birth and death, the name of their spouse(s), and the year of marriage:
