Elizabeth Shoun and James O. Speer

      Elizabeth Shoun (1796-1881) married James O. Speer (c. 1790-1872) on 3 March 1814, in Carter County, Tennessee. James' gravestone is spelled Spear, but most of the children used the spelling Speer, and that is what we will do. This family lived across the state line, in Virginia.       (1) Rebecca Speer (1815- ?) married twice, first to William Stuart (or Stewart) on 20 May 1843 in Virginia. To this marriage were born two children. We are unaware of whether William died or there was a divorce, as Rebecca married a second time to Ephriam Allison. We have no record of any children born to this second marriage.

      (3) Jane Speer (1819-1886) married Levi "Lee" Farris (c. 1804-c. 1869) on 16 December 1838, in Johnson County, Tennessee. This family moved to Polk County, Missouri, and there nine children were born to this marriage. We do not understand why Lee returned to Johnson County, where he died around 1869.

      (5) Barbara Speer (1823-1880) married David S. Greer on 15 September 1843 in Johnson County, Tennessee. David was born in Ashe County, North Carolina. Barbara died after 1880 at Laurel Bloomery, so we believe that this family remained in Johnson County.       (6) Susannah Speer (c. 1825- ?) married James E. Ketchum (or Kitchum) on 25 February 1845, in Johnson County, Tennessee. Like Elizabeth's marriage to William Ketchum, these two sisters who married brothers, left the area and we do not know exactly where they went.

      (7) Mary "Polly" Speer (1829- ?) married Andrew Greer on 28 January 1844 in Johnson County, Tennessee. To this marriage were born three children which are listed below:

      (8) Eleanor "Ellen" Speer (c. 1827-1857) married C.E. "John" Ray (1840-1905) on 12 November 1848 in Johnson County, Tennessee. To this marriage were born five children. Upon Ellen's premature death, John re-married to Elizabeth Underwood in 1858, and after a divorce, to Mary A. Smith in 1888. Both of these marriages were in Kentucky.       (9) Leonard Napolean Speer (1833-1887) married Elizabeth Hannah Wilson (1830-1893) on 6 May 1852 in Johnson County, Tennessee. Elizabeth's parents were John Wilson and Elizabeth Rambo. Leonard and Elizabeth moved to Varnell, Georgia, and there raised a family of eight children. The first three children were born in Damascus, Virginia, while the other five were born in Georgia.
