Rebecca Shoun and John Smith Vaught

      Rebecca Shoun (4 June 1813-28 April 1853) was the thirteenth child of Leonard Shoun and Barbara Virginia Slemp. She married John Smith Vaught (16 June 1810-18 May 1885) c/a 1830 in Carter County, Tennessee. The vaught family lived about six miles south of Mountain City, near an area called Vaughtsville on Roane Creek, near the mouth of Vaught Creek. John was a farmer, a large slave owner and he manufactured hammered iron. He was the son of Joseph Vaught and Nancy Goodwin and Celia Dugger.

      Their youngest son David Henry was only four years old when Rebecca died before reaching age 40. John remarried Nancy E. Gambill on 21 December 1854 in Johnson County, Tennessee. However, we find no record of any children being born to his second wife.

      (1) Mary Elizabeth Vaught (1831-1866) married Joseph J. Wagner (17 May 1818-24 August 1898) on 26 September 1847 in Johnson County, Tennessee. When Carl B. Neal wrote his book on Leonard Shoun and Barbara Virginia Slemp and their Descendants in the mid-1950's, he was not sure which Joseph Wagner that Mary Elizabeth married. Our conclusion is reached by finding Joseph J. Wagner buried near Mary Elizabeth Wagner in the Neva community. Neal could find only one daughter born to this couple, but we now have recorded seven children which are listed below, with the year of birth/death, name of spouse(s), year of marriage, and the number and names of children, if known:

      (3) Joseph Leonard Vaught (4 March 1838-1897) married Louisa Jane "Lou" Mast (20 January 1838-1924) on 29 December 1855, at Shouns, Tennessee. Joseph lived on Roane Creek, south of Mountain City, and was a farmer, stock raiser, and manufactured wagons and other farm implements and tools. Lou Mast was a sister to James H. Mast who married Eliza Vaught.

      (4) John B. Vaught (24 April 1841-2 February 1922) was married twice, first to Rachel Wagner (27 November 1841-18 August 1893). We are not sure of the date or place, but it was around 1859. Rachel descends from Joseph, Mathias and Daniel Wagner. To this union were born seven children.

      Upon the passing of Rachel in 1893, when she was only 52 years old, John married a second time to Sarah Ann Grant (1851-1915) around 1900. There were no children born to this marriage.

      (6) Sarah Anne Nancy Vaught (17 May 1846-13 March 1941) married Daniel Boone Baker (10 July 1842-14 March 1932) on 8 May 1862 in Johnson County, Tennessee. Daniel was the son of Alexander W. Baker and his wife Naomi. To this marriage were born only two children, which were:
