Nancy Shoun and Caleb Raynor Phillips

      Nancy Shoun (4 January 1811- ?) was the twlelvth child born to Leonard and Barbara Virginia Slemp. Nancy married Caleb Raynor Phillips (15 May 1800-7 April 1865) on 12 February 1832 in Carter County, Tennessee. Caleb was born, probably in Surrey County, North Carolina and the family lived in the area called Pine Swamp, in Ashe County, North Carolina.

      We are unaware of how Caleb found his way over the mountains to Mountain City to find, romance and marry Nancy. Or it may have been that Nancy went over to the Jefferson, North Carolina area and found Caleb. We will never know.

      The family bible where most of the names and dates of this family are recorded, is in the possession of Fannie Phillips, who lives in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

      Caleb was a farmer and a large land owner, having descended from a long line of Phillips ancestors. To this marriage were born seven children, which are listed below, along with their year of birth and death, the name of their spouse(s), and year of marriage:

      (2) George Harrison Phillips (1 February 1834-28 January 1920) married Martha Walters (29 September 1833-16 July 1900) on 13 March 1856 in Ashe County, North Carolina.       (3) Jonathan "Leonard" Phillips (7 September 1835-24 January 1865) married Jane A. "Jennie" Greer (b 6 December 1839) on 16 February 1856, in Ashe County, North Carolina. Jane was the daughter of Thomas Greer and Mary Ray. Leonard died of Civil War injuries. To this union were born three children which are listed below:

      (4) Mary Ann Barbara Phillips (17 August 1839-21 or 27 February 1921) married Peter McNeill (d 14 February 1909) on 4 February 1855 in Ashe County, North Carolina. Peter was a son of John McNeill and Rachel Eller. (The Eller family are the family that left the tremendous genealogical library to the University at Boone, North Carolina.)

      Mary and Peter had a large family, with fourteen children being born to this union. They lived at Beaver Creek, West Jefferson, Ashe County, North Carolina.       (7) James Caleb Phillips (2 January 1848-9 March 1936) married twice, first to Mary Ann "Becky" Vannoy (c. 1849-1888) on 7 June 1867 in Ashe County, North Carolina. Becky was the daughter of John H. Vannoy and Rebecca Powell. To this union were born six children.

      James was a farmer, living in Pine Swamp, Ashe County, North Carolina. After the passing of Becky in 1888, James married a second time to Nicey Carolyn Hendrix on 20 November 1890, also in Ashe County, North Carolina. To this union were born four children.
