Sarah "Sally" Shoun and Greene Moore


      Sarah "Sally" Shoun (22 April 1808-1886) was the eleventh born child to Leonard Shoun and Barbara Virginia Slemp. She married Greene Moore (29 Aug 1798-10 November 1884) in 1825 in Carter County, Tennessee. Greene was born at Guilford County, North Carolina. The first six children were born in North Carolina, but this family spent most of their married life in and around Mountain City, Tennessee (then Taylorsville), as Greene was Postmaster, Justice of the Peace, and a merchant there. He served as Postmaster for Taylorsville for thirty years. Greene was a prominent Decmocrat and very active in politics. He was a pesonal friend of Andrew Johnson and James K. Polk. He received the rank of Colonel in the peace-time Militia.

      After raising a very large family, the couple moved back to Lenoir, in Caldwell County, North Carolina, where both passed away.

The following covers the families of each of the above fourteen chidlren:


      (1) Warren Moore (1827) was born in Carter County, Tennessee before the couple moved to North Carolina. Warren died in Taylorsville, Tennessee at a young age.

      (2) Valeria A. Moore (29 August 1828- ?) was married twice, first to John K. Duff on 29 March 1849. We believe there were two children born to this marriage, but we are aware of only one which is listed below. John died and Valeria married a second time to colonel Giles Gregory, either in Tennessee or Illinois. She passed away in Illinois.

      (3) Julis Hill Moore (9 November 1829-8 February 1888) was married three times, first to Dixon Mumford on 26 November 1846 in Ashe County, North Carolina. Her second marriage was to Major Emmett at Wilkes County, North Carolina, and her third marriage was to Captain William Waugh at Ashe County, North Carolina. Both of these military men were killed in the Civil War.

      We are unaware of any children born to any of these marriages, but believe that they were some.

      (4) Nancy Loretta Moore (1831- ?) married Dr. John Robert Hughes, but we do not know where the marriage took place. We believe it was in North Carolina, as Nancy died at Lenoir, Caldwell County, North Carolina. There were no children.

      (5) Emily J. Moore (20 April 1831-1894) was married twice, first to Lawson Widby (c. 1826-4 March 1856) on 28 December 1848, in Johnson County, Tennessee. To this marriage were born four children, but we know the names of only two of them. Their father died at the early age of 30, and Emily married a second time to Phillip Moore Kiser (1825-1902) on 4 February 1857 in Mountain City, Tennessee. Phillips was her first cousin. Phillips was born in Stokes County, North Carolina and died at Granite Falls, North Carolina.

      (6) John Leonard Moore (20 November 1833-1872) does not appear to have been married. He was a Lieutenant in the Union Army, and lost a leg in the Civil War. He was cared for by his brother, Marin, who lived in Richmond, Virginia during the war. After the war, John Leonard settled in Clay County, Illinois, where his sister, Maria, (Mrs. McCauley) lived and where he remained until shortly before his death. He died in Lenoir, North Carolina in 1872, at the age of 39.

      (7) Eliza Barbara Moore (7 September 1835-5 June 1911) married Richard Hamilton "Ham" Donnelly (23 September 1830-28 June 1898) on 23 December 1852 in Johnson County, Tennessee. Ham was the son of Richard Donnelly and grandson of Robert Donnelly, who was born in Ireland in 1760. Eliza and Ham lived on a sizeable farm north of Mountain City, Tennessee.

      (8) Martin Van Buren Moore (12 April 1837- ?) was married twice, first to Sallie E. Council (d 22 February 1888) in 1864 at Camden, South Carolina. He was born at Lenoir, North Carolina. He lived in Richmond, Virginia for some time. He then moved to a small town in western North Carolina, Valkle Crucis, near Boone, and became a merchant. It was here that he met and married Sallie. To this union were born eleven children. Martin served as a Captain in the Confederate Army.

      After the war, Martin was a merchant in Lenoir, North Carolina, and later he became a Post Office Inspector, travelling through the southern states and as far west as the Rocky and Sierra Nevada mountains.

      Upon the death of Sallie, Martin married a second time to Elizabeth Plowman. He lived at Auburn, Alabama, overseeing a farm. It was there that he died.

      (11) Rachel "Alice" Moore (9 April 1844-1903) was married twice, first to John Lewis Kiser (1833-1863) on 10 October 1858. To this marriage were born two children, but only one lived to maturity.

      Upon the passing of John in 1863, Alice remarried William Kendrick Donnelly (14 January 1827-1921) on 31 August 1865 in Johnson County, Tennessee. William K. descended from Robert Donnelly who was born in Ireland in 1760. William was a school teacher, a farmer, had a sawmill, and at one time operated the Central Hotel in Mountain City, Tennessee. He also served as a State Representative.

      (12) Pleasant G. Moore (6 November 1847- ?) was married twice, first to Mary Elizabeth Forney, and second, to Myra McDowell. We have no information on the dates or places of these marriages, although we understand that the first marriage ended in divorce. Pleasant was a Lieutenant in the Confederate Army.

      There was one child born to his first marriage and seven children born to his second marriage, which are listed below, with the estimated year of birth. We have no further information on these children, although we do know that most of them resided in North Carolina:

      (13) Sarah Luckey Moore (1850- ?) died young.


      (14) Mary S. Moore (1852-c. 1950) married W.H. "Nathan" Gwynne in Lenoir, North Carolina. Nathan was a farmer, operated cotton and woolen mills, and became a merchant in Lenoir. Mary was one of four grandchildren of Leonard and Barbara Shoun who were living in the 1930's.

      To this union were born six children, but three of them died unnamed. The three are listed below:
