Loyd
Family
James Loyd (ca 1735-1815) and his wife, Ruth Loyd, were among the earliest settlers in what is now known as Johnson County, Tennessee, coming to the area shortly after 1790, probably in the spring of 1791. As a young couple they had lived in the Shenandoah Valley of Frederick County, Virginia, near what is now Charlestown, West Virginia. They moved to Botetourt County, Virginia, in 1771. All of their family were probably born in Frederick County, Virginia. It is thought that the Loyds first lived in the Butler area, however, early land records have not been found to prove this fact. James and Ruth Loyd sold 100 acres of land to Nicholas Grindstaff on the north side of Roan Creek in 1809.
Since we find very few records of any of the Loyd family except John, Sr., this listing will be limited to his descendants. However, James Loyd and his wife, Ruth, are believed to be the parents of at least six children, including John, Sr. They were Levi, born ca 1757, who married Abigail "Abby" Hale in 1786 in Virginia, but settled somewhere in Tennessee; Mary, born ca 1760, who married Josiah Terry in Virginia; Dytha, born ca 1762 (both Mary and Dytha settled in Virginia); Esther, born ca 1764, who married John Storm in Virginia; and Ruth, born ca 1765, who married James Bradley in Virginia. Esther and Ruth went with their husbands to Kentucky. Only John appears in the 1840 Johnson County census, and the following listing covers his family of six children.
We are especially interested in obtaining these later generation "cousins" for inclusion in this listing.
