Mary "Polly" Elrod and Solomon Blackburn






      Mary "Polly" Elrod (7 April 1823- ?) married Solomon Blackburn (23 March 1823-ca 1864) on 21 December 1843 in Ashe County, North Carolina. Mary "Polly" was the ninth born child of Adam Elrod and Nancy Phillips.

      Solomon was shot and killed by a home guard during the Civil War. The home guard was Alex Wilson who shot Solompn at his home place, known as the "Lineville Waters place." Wilson was commanded to shoot by Nagar H. Bingham (who was accused of aiding to the Union). There was no trial, however, Alex Wilson was later found dead. After the death of Solomon, little more is known about Mary "Polly."

      To this marriage were born seven children, which are listed below, with their year of birth/death, name of spouse(s), and year of marriage, along with the names and year of birth/death, if known, of their children:

      In the 1870 Ashe County census we find Mary "Polly" Blackburn living with her father and mother, along with the following children: Emaline Blackburn age 22, Phinus Blackburn age 18, Lafayette age 15, Ettie Blackburn age 13, and Wiley Blackburn age 11. We do not know who these children belong to.
